Letter from Interim President Select Justin Daffron: The Right Place at the Right Time

February 11, 2022

Fr. Daffron outside Marquette HallDear Loyola Community,

I am grateful for all the well wishes and expressions of support I received after yesterday鈥檚 announcement, and it is humbling to be entrusted with this opportunity to serve Loyola during this time of transition.听

People asked me before whether I was interested in becoming a university president, and I鈥檝e always answered that it would have to be at the right place at the right time. For me, Loyola is the right place and now is the right time. I love the drive and the diversity of Loyola鈥檚 student body, its caring faculty and its committed staff. And I鈥檝e loved New Orleans since I experienced my first Mardi Gras as a college student.听

Loyola has undergone a remarkable transformation over the past four years, guided by President Tetlow and the rest of the university鈥檚 outstanding leadership team. Throughout this transition period and beyond, we鈥檙e committed to maintaining this momentum, strengthening Loyola鈥檚 position, advancing our strategic plan and assuring the excellence integral to a Jesuit education.听

These transition periods can be difficult, and the Loyola community will deeply miss President Tetlow. Coupled with the ongoing challenges and fatigue brought on by COVID-19, I understand that we鈥檒l all be working to overcome a sense of loss and wariness about what the future holds.听

But this time is also hopeful. Loyola is in a position of strength thanks to the hard work of the past several years, and the university鈥檚 dedicated leadership team is well-prepared to keep advancing our mission. And I鈥檓 grateful to President Tetlow, not just for her vision and passion that has built such a strong foundation for the future, but also for her guidance over the next several months as we make this transition of leadership.听

You鈥檒l hear more from me in the coming weeks, and I look forward to hearing more from you all as we continue our service to Loyola. 听In the meantime, know of my thoughts and prayers.

Gratefully,

Justin Daffron, S.J.
