Using social media savvy, students and alumni capture grand prize of Tourism Ireland鈥檚 2022 Global Greening Competition 鈥 and a chance to study abroad

(New Orleans - July 25, 2022) Using social media savvy, Loyola students and alumni have won a scholarship for a fellow student to study abroad in Ireland next spring. Drawing on Jesuit values of respect for the environment and the world around us, they captured campus photos on St. Patrick鈥檚 Day to win the grand prize in Tourism Ireland鈥檚 2022 Global Greening Initiative.

Tourism Ireland鈥檚 encourages buildings, sites and universities worldwide to "green" in celebration of St. Patrick's Day on March 17. And this year, Loyola joined the Sydney Opera House, the Leaning Tower of Pisa, Niagara Falls and other and sites all over the world in the competition.听

Student 鈥淧eer Advisors鈥 from the university鈥檚 Office of Study Abroad collaborated with Loyola alumni David Barth and Maura Lindsey to create an Instagram slideshow
featuring Maura in locations around campus. Their efforts won an 鈧8000 tuition scholarship and roundtrip airfare for a student nominated to study abroad at Maynooth University in Spring 2023.

"I wanted to create a post that was unique while showing our beautiful campus and connecting it to our students and Irish culture. I came up with many ideas but the one that stood out the most to me was being able to show the most well known parts of campus that our students enjoy everyday,鈥 said Zoe Stambaugh, who graduated last spring and was the brainchild behind the winning posts.听

鈥淲hen I thought of the going green initiative I thought of the cultural connection of New Orleans and its Irish heritage. I knew then to see if I could get my friend and classmate Maura to help in this project, as I have known of her history and talent in Irish dancing. In my work in the study abroad office it has been so wonderful seeing all the students that have been able to go abroad after almost two years of limited travel. I am excited to see this scholarship being used to help a student that might have been apprehensive of starting the process of studying abroad due to the price. I hope this can be the start of many students being able to experience studying abroad."

CIE is committed to making international learning opportunities accessible to Loyola New Orleans students. The office of study abroad is currently accepting applications for study at for the Spring 2023 semester.

听Approximately one-third of Loyola students study abroad at some point during their college experience, many of them using some form of scholarship.
