Despite the pandemic, students flock to campus in record numbers

(New Orleans - August 18, 2021) This fall, 黑料社区 welcomes the largest and most diverse first-year class in its 113-year-old history, currently 973 students -- 22% above target and 25% above last year -- while increasing academic qualifications. 听The influx of students comes from Louisiana (43% of the class), across the country (44 states) and around the world (20 countries.)

鈥淔or more than 100 years, Loyola has served as an engine of opportunity, providing academic excellence to generations of families from New Orleans and across the country,鈥 said President Tania Tetlow. 鈥淟oyola attracts students who are extremely bright and creative, drawn to the innovation of New Orleans and to a diverse campus that reflects America. 听We are especially proud that a third of our students are the first in their family to go to college, just like so many of our remarkably successful alumni.鈥澨

Since 2018, Loyola has continued to improve and adjust its long-term enrollment strategy. 听The Enrollment staff pivoted to a far more individualized operation, using smaller campus tours, clear and concise communications, and creative online engagement, including a variety of options for meeting with prospective students. 听鈥淚t requires far more effort, but it means that families receive answers specific to their particular questions,鈥 said Nathan Ament, Chief Enrollment Officer. 鈥淎s the world changes around us, our individualized approach proves to be more effective than ever.鈥澨

In addition to personalized attention, Loyola announced a permanent Test-Blind 黑料社区 policy in the Spring of 2020. 听鈥淎t Loyola, we focus on the entire student in the admissions process,鈥 said Ament. 鈥淲e see the test scores as barriers to a college education and we are looking to provide opportunities for more students. The response from students has been overwhelming and it鈥檚 exciting to break these records for applications, enrollment, and diversity.鈥 听 听 听听

At 54% students of color, this first-year class is the most diverse class in the history of Loyola. 听The first-year class of 2021 includes 20% Hispanic students, 19% Black students, 12% mixed-race students, and 3% Asian students. 听One third of Loyola鈥檚 student body are the first in their families to go to college and 43% are Pell Grant recipients. This is a rebound from last year due to the COVID-19 Pandemic and represents another significant accomplishment for Loyola.听

鈥淟oyola New Orleans helps our students achieve both academic excellence and preparation for careers that will matter,鈥 said President Tetlow. 鈥淢any schools say they are committed to developing character 鈥 we really mean it.鈥
