(New Orleans – January 13, 2021) Over the last seven years, 84 students from �������� have received life-changing Benjamin A. Gilman Scholarships to expand their horizons through study abroad. This year, Loyola senior Gabrielle Garcia and junior Zoe Stambaugh stand proudly among the four Louisiana students and 900 students nationwide to win this prestigious and competitive scholarship.

Gabrielle, a theatre and musical arts major, will spend the fall 2021 semester studying at EWHA Woman’s University in Seoul, Korea, and Zoe, who studies graphic design, is planning for a summer program in Prague, the Czech Republic. Both are first-generation students.

“Nearly 30 percent of Loyola New Orleans students study abroad at some point during their undergraduate careers and one-third of Loyola students are the first in their families to attend college, so the Gilman is a wonderful opportunity for high-achievers on campus hoping to expand their horizons,” said Wyatt Boykin, study abroad advisor. “We are exceedingly proud of these high-achieving Loyola students who continue to pursue their dreams.”

The U.S. Department of State’s Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program funds internships or study abroad programs for undergraduate Pell Grant recipients. Since 2001, the Gilman Scholarship has enabled more than 31,000 Americans to study in 151 countries, representing diverse backgrounds including ethnic minority students, students with disabilities, and first-generation college students. Many Gilman Scholars point to their experience with the Gilman Scholarship as a pivotal point in their lives, significantly impacting their academic and career goals.
