Loyola Law Dean Receives Louisiana State Bar Association’s President’s Award
Dean Landrieu recognized for her exemplary leadership as a judge and dean, and her overall commitment to the practice of law in Louisiana
(New Orleans, La. – June 9, 2022) Today, at the General Assembly of the Louisiana State Bar Association, Law Dean Madeleine Landrieu, J.D. ’88, H ’05, received the 2022 President's Award.
The LSBA honored Dean Landrieu with this award in recognition of her exemplary leadership as a judge and as Dean of Loyola University College of Law, and her overall commitment to the practice of law in Louisiana.
“There are a lot of people who work really hard every day to make our legal and judicial systems work,” Landrieu said. “None of us do this work to be recognized, but it is important that the work itself is recognized. The wheels of justice don’t turn without all of us in it together. I was honored to be among some of our state’s leading ‘turners.’”
Prior to her appointment as dean, Landrieu served as a judge on the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeal and on the Orleans Parish Civil District Court. During her 16-year tenure on the Judiciary, she served as president of the Louisiana District Judges Association, president of the Louisiana Judicial College and chair of the new Judges Training Committee. Prior to being elected to the bench, she was a litigator in private practice.
Dean Landrieu advocates for laws and policies relative to children who come before the courts because of abuse or neglect. She is a founding board member of the Louisiana Institute for Children in Families, a nonprofit organization designed to remove the barriers that prevent children from knowing the love and permanency of a forever family; she has been instrumental in the successful launch of Louisiana’s Quality Parenting Initiative and Louisiana Fosters, efforts designed to transform foster care in Louisiana. She served on the board (chair in 2016) of Covenant House New Orleans, a service provider for homeless, at-risk and trafficked youth. She teaches Trial Advocacy and the Comparative Rights of Children.
She is the recipient of the Michaelle Pitard Wayne Professionalism Award from the New Orleans chapter of the Association of Women Attorneys; the Gillis Long Poverty Law Center’s Public Service Award; the Louisiana State Bar Association’s Pro Bono Publico and President’s Awards; the inaugural President’s Award from the Louisiana Judicial College in 2017; and the Hannah G. Solomon Award from the Greater New Orleans section of the National Council of Jewish Women in 2019.
LSBA President H. Minor Pipes III presented Landrieu her award at the association’s General Assembly, held during the Combined Annual Meeting/Summer School at Sandestin Golf & Beach Resort. The LSBA serves more than 23,000 members, many of whom are Loyola Law alumni.
