(New Orleans – June 9, 2020) Throughout history and across the globe, the many women religious of the world have promoted human dignity and the goodness of creation by running schools, founding hospitals, and championing other transformative endeavors. Leaders themselves, they empower young girls and women to help their communities and to become leaders too – often, in times and places where women have not otherwise had access to leadership opportunities.

This summer, on Thursday evenings, WLAE-TV New Orleans Public Television will honor women religious by sharing two video series which the Loyola Institute of Ministry (LIM) has produced with generous support from the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation and in partnership with Salt + Light Media.

The series kicks off at 7 p.m. Thursday, June 11, with a televised introduction by Loyola New Orleans President Tania Tetlow.

The three-part documentary series, “ highlights how the work of sisters in East Africa is animated by Catholic Social Teaching and contributes to sustainable development. Divided into three segments, this series runs June 11, June 18 and June 25.

In the seven-part series titled six of the seven communities of women religious depicted have a presence right here in New Orleans: the Congregation of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, Congregation of St. Joseph Sisters, Daughters of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary of Chi Hoa, Holy Family Sisters, Religious of the Sacred Heart, Sacred Heart Sisters of Benin City, Nigeria. The series begins at 7 p.m., Thursday, July 9 and runs seven weeks through August 20.

Loyola President Tania Tetlow will introduce the series.

“Since the city’s earliest days, Catholic sisters have played an important leadership role in New Orleans, often working in partnership with the Jesuit community,” said President Tetlow. “The Loyola Institute of Ministry is proud to be a part of that history ─ educating Catholic sisters and helping people across the globe to find their vocations, to be of service, and to answer God’s call.”

Dr. Tom Ryan, LIM Director and Professor, is inspired by the sisters he’s taught.

“Whether in South Sudan, elsewhere in East and West Africa, and across the United States, I have seen sisters making a difference as leaders who put their faith into action. I am excited that WLAE is screening these documentaries so that more people can be inspired by sisters’ work.”
