Loyola Nursing Student in Sim Lab

Loyola Ochsner Simulation Lab

The Loyola Ochsner Nursing Simulation Lab recreates the experience of working in a real healthcare facility. You'll have the opportunity to practice clinical skills and make errors in a safe, controlled environment. Connecting theory to practice, you'll learn by doing and develop essential critical thinking and communication skills. As a BSN student, you can start learning in the sim lab in the first semester of your second year of studies.

Program Requirements听

You can receive your bachelor of science in nursing after completing the prerequisites in the pre-nursing program in your first year. Unlike most schools, Loyola offers a direct admit to the nursing program for pre-nursing students enrolled in the program who earn a grade of a 鈥淐鈥 or better and maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0 in all prerequisite courses.

Developed in partnership with Ochsner clinical faculty, the curriculum is a blend of theory and evidence-based clinical practice providing a foundation to prepare for the NCLEX licensing exam and success in a broad range of nursing and healthcare roles. Most students will be able to complete the pre-nursing and nursing curriculum in four years. 

In your last two years of study, you鈥檒l complete eight clinical rotations to develop floor-ready skills under the supervision of professional healthcare providers. You鈥檒l explore the following nursing specialties throughout your clinical experience:

  • Medical Surgical/Adult Health
  • Women鈥檚 Health
  • Pediatrics
  • Mental Health
  • Community Health
  • Critical Care

Overview of Requirements: 120 credit hours (crs) required for completion

  • Modified Loyola Core: 39 crs
  • Nursing major: 69 crs
  • Prerequisite Sciences: 12 crs
Pre-Nursing Year 鈥

Students begin in Pre-Nursing courses before enrolling in Nursing courses. Students will begin pursuing their Bachelor of Science in Nursing in their 2nd year. In their 1st year, a student is considered Pre-Nursing. They will spend their Fall and Spring semesters taking prerequisites. Upon completing the required prerequisite courses with a C or better and maintaining a minimum of 2.5 cumulative GPA, the Pre-Nursing students will be placed in the Nursing program. They will then begin taking Nursing courses in the Fall of their 2nd year.

Loyola Core 鈥

All Traditional BSN students complete a modified Loyola Core with 39 crs in Loyola Core requirement areas. Modifications include:

  • Foundations 鈥 First-Year Seminar is satisfied by NURS T121 Introduction to Healthcare
  • Foundations 鈥 Mathematics is satisfied by MATH T122, MATH A110 College Algebra, or higher MATH, or can be exempted through exam scores:
    • ACT Math 鈥 29 or above
    • SAT Math 鈥 690 or above
    • ALEKS Math placement score 鈥 76 or above
  • Investigating Nature requirement is satisfied with BIOL A110 Anatomy & Physiology I which must be completed with a grade of C or better.
  • Natural Science requirement is satisfied with BIOL A112 Anatomy & Physiology II which must be completed with a grade of C or better.
  • Philosophy II requirement is satisfied by PHIL W234 Medical Ethics
  • Social Science requirement is satisfied by PSYC A100 Introduction to Psychology with a grade of C or better.
  • Students will complete only one of the following Loyola Core requirements for 3 crs. If granted an exemption from Mathematics requirement, both courses for 6 crs are required.

Nursing Major 鈥

Complete 69 crs of Nursing major courses. All Nursing major courses must be completed with a grade of C or better. Requirements include:
